UPSC Prelims 2021 · GS Paper I
Question 55: Geography
Consider the following rivers :
- 1.Brahmani
- 2.Nagavali
- 3.Subarnarekha
- 4.Vamsadhara
Which of the above rise from the Eastern Ghats?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
The Nagavali and the Vamsadhara rise in the Eastern Ghats of Odisha and flow into the Bay of Bengal through Andhra Pradesh. The Brahmani is formed by the Sankh and South Koel, which rise on the Chota Nagpur plateau, and the Subarnarekha rises near Nagri on the Ranchi plateau. Remember: Nagavali and Vamsadhara are Eastern Ghats rivers; Brahmani and Subarnarekha start on the Chota Nagpur plateau.
- 1. The Brahmani is formed by rivers from the Chota Nagpur plateau.
- 2. The Nagavali rises in the Eastern Ghats.
- 3. The Subarnarekha rises on the Ranchi plateau, near Nagri.
- 4. The Vamsadhara rises in the Eastern Ghats.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: The Brahmani is formed by rivers from the Chota Nagpur plateau.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: The Nagavali rises in the Eastern Ghats.
Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 3 or 4.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: the Brahmani does not rise in the Eastern Ghats.
- (b) Right: the Nagavali and Vamsadhara rise in the Eastern Ghats.
- (c) Wrong: the Subarnarekha rises on the Ranchi plateau.
- (d) Wrong: both the Brahmani and the Subarnarekha start on the Chota Nagpur plateau.
