Question 54: Geography

With reference to India, Didwana, Kuchaman, Sargol and Khatu are the names of

aglaciers
bmangrove areas
cRamsar sites
dsaline lakes

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Didwana, Kuchaman, Sargol and Khatu are saline lakes in Rajasthan, alongside Sambhar, Pachpadra and Lunkaransar. They lie in the arid and semi-arid west of the state, fed by seasonal streams, and have been important for salt production. They are not glaciers or mangroves. Remember: Rajasthan's inland saline lakes include Sambhar, Didwana, Kuchaman and Pachpadra.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: Rajasthan's arid plains have no glaciers.
  • (b) Wrong: mangroves grow in coastal tidal areas, not in Rajasthan's interior.
  • (c) Wrong: these four are known as saline lakes, not as Ramsar sites.
  • (d) Right: they are saline lakes of Rajasthan.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
