Question 62: Reading Comprehension

Passage - 1 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “India's economic footprint, given its population, still…”

On the basis of the above passage, the following assumptions have been made : In today's global economy,

  1. 1.regulations are not effectively used to protect local markets.
  2. 2.social and environmental concerns are generally ignored by the governments across the world while implementing the regulations.

Which of the above assumptions is/are valid ?

a1 only
b2 only
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

The passage says regulations may be used to protect local markets, so assumption 1, that they are not effectively used for this, contradicts it. It also says regulations should aim at cost-justified social and environmental benefits; that is advice on how they ought to be viewed, not a claim that governments across the world ignore these concerns, so assumption 2 is also unsupported. Neither is valid.

  • 1. Regulations are said to be usable to protect local markets, the opposite of this assumption.
  • 2. The passage prescribes such benefits; it does not say governments ignore them.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: Regulations are said to be usable to protect local markets, the opposite of this assumption.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b) goes: it includes 2.

What you needed to know: The passage prescribes such benefits; it does not say governments ignore them.

Only (d) is left. This one needs every statement.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: the passage says regulations can protect local markets.
  • (b) Wrong: ignoring social and environmental concerns is not stated.
  • (c) Wrong: both are unsupported.
  • (d) Right: 1 is contradicted and 2 is not stated.
