Question 38: Basic Numeracy
Ena was born 4 years after her parents' marriage. Her mother is three years younger than her father and 24 years older than Ena, who is 13 years old. At what age did Ena's father get married ?
a22 years
b23 years
c24 years
d25 years
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Ena is 13, so her mother is 13 + 24 = 37 and her father is 37 + 3 = 40. Ena was born 4 years after the marriage, so the marriage was 13 + 4 = 17 years ago. The father's age at marriage = 40 - 17 = 23. Count back from the present ages, not from Ena's birth, to avoid slipping by the 4-year gap.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: 22 does not fit 40 - 17.
- (b) Right: 40 - 17 = 23.
- (c) Wrong: 40 - 17 is 23, not 24.
- (d) Wrong: 40 - 17 is 23, not 25.
