Question 21: Reading Comprehension

Passage - 1 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “Low-end IoT (Internet of Things) devices are…”

Which one of the following statements is the most logical and rational inference that can be made from the above passage ?

aDevelopment of enabling technologies in India can be a big boost to its manufacturing sector.
bIndia is not yet fully ready to adopt IoT in view of the imminent security challenges.
cLife becomes more comfortable with the development of cheap low-end IoT devices.
dAs we go digital, we must recognise the huge threat to Internet security from some IoT devices.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

The passage describes low-end IoT devices as cheap, spreading fast and expected to grow explosively, while adding security would raise their cost and the new security challenges are daunting. The inference that best fits is that as we go digital, cheap devices of this kind pose a serious threat to Internet security. The other options bring in India's manufacturing, India's readiness or comfort of life, none of which the passage discusses.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: manufacturing and enabling technologies in India are not discussed.
  • (b) Wrong: India's readiness is not discussed.
  • (c) Wrong: comfort is not the passage's concern; its focus is security.
  • (d) Right: cheap devices spreading widely without added security threaten Internet security.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
