UPSC Prelims 2018 · GS Paper I
Question 86: Environment and Ecology
Why is a plant called Prosopis juliflora often mentioned in news ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Prosopis juliflora (vilayati babul or mesquite) is a fast-spreading invasive tree from Central and South America, introduced in India. It draws down groundwater, spreads over grassland and scrub, and suppresses native plants through dense growth, so it reduces the biodiversity of the areas it invades. It is not known for cosmetics or pesticides. Remember: Prosopis, Lantana and water hyacinth are standard examples of invasive alien species in India.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) It is not widely used in cosmetics.
- (b) Right: it is invasive and reduces biodiversity.
- (c) It is not a key source of pesticides.
- (d) Wrong: option (b) is right.
