Question 85: Geography

Consider the following statements :

  1. 1.The Barren Island volcano is an active volcano located in the Indian territory.
  2. 2.Barren Island lies about 140 km east of Great Nicobar.
  3. 3.The last time the Barren Island volcano erupted was in 1991 and it has remained inactive since then.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

a1 only
b2 and 3
c3 only
d1 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Barren Island in the Andaman Sea is India's only active volcano, so statement 1 holds. It lies about 140 km north-east of Port Blair, not east of Great Nicobar, which is far to the south. The volcano erupted in 1991 but has erupted again in later years, so it has not stayed inactive since then.

  • 1. Barren Island is India's only active volcano.
  • 2. It is about 140 km north-east of Port Blair.
  • 3. It erupted again after 1991 and remains active.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (b), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.

What you needed to know: It erupted again after 1991 and remains active.

Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: only statement 1 holds.
  • (b) Wrong: statements 2 and 3 are false.
  • (c) Wrong: it has erupted after 1991.
  • (d) Wrong: statement 3 is false.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
