UPSC Prelims 2018 · GS Paper I
Question 35: Environment and Ecology
With reference to the ‘Global Alliance for Climate-Smart Agriculture (GACSA)’, which of the following statements is/are correct ?
- 1.GACSA is an outcome of the Climate Summit held in Paris in 2015.
- 2.Membership of GACSA does not create any binding obligations.
- 3.India was instrumental in the creation of GACSA.
Select the correct answer using the code given below :
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
GACSA was launched at the UN Climate Summit in New York in September 2014, not at the 2015 Paris conference. It is a voluntary alliance of governments, organisations and institutions that promotes climate-smart agriculture, and membership carries no binding obligations. India was not among its architects, so statement 3 fails. Remember: GACSA is voluntary, non-binding, and dates from New York 2014.
- 1. It came out of the 2014 UN Climate Summit in New York, not Paris 2015.
- 2. Membership is voluntary and creates no binding duties.
- 3. India was not instrumental in creating it.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.
What you needed to know: India was not instrumental in creating it.
Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: statements 1 and 3 are false.
- (b) Right: only the non-binding nature is correct.
- (c) Wrong: statement 3 is false.
- (d) Wrong: statements 1 and 3 are false.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
