Question 30: International Relations and Current Affairs

International Labour Organization’s Conventions 138 and 182 are related to

aChild labour
bAdaptation of agricultural practices to global climate change
cRegulation of food prices and food security
dGender parity at the workplace

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

ILO Convention 138 (1973) sets the minimum age for admission to employment, and Convention 182 (1999) requires the prohibition and immediate elimination of the worst forms of child labour. Both therefore concern child labour. India ratified both in 2017. Remember: C138 is minimum age and C182 is worst forms of child labour; they are core ILO conventions.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: C138 sets the minimum age and C182 targets the worst forms of child labour.
  • (b) Neither convention deals with agriculture or climate adaptation.
  • (c) Neither convention deals with food prices or food security.
  • (d) Gender parity at work is dealt with by other conventions such as the Equal Remuneration Convention.
