Question 29: Geography

Among the following cities, which one lies on a longitude closest to that of Delhi ?

aBengaluru
bHyderabad
cNagpur
dPune

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Delhi lies at about 77.2 degrees East. Bengaluru is at about 77.6 degrees East, only about 0.4 degree away. Hyderabad (about 78.5), Nagpur (about 79.1) and Pune (about 73.9) lie further east or west. So Bengaluru is closest in longitude even though it is far to the south. Remember: longitude runs north-south, so cities can share a longitude while differing greatly in latitude.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: about 77.6 E, within half a degree of Delhi's 77.2 E.
  • (b) Hyderabad is near 78.5 E, over a degree to the east.
  • (c) Nagpur is near 79.1 E, nearly two degrees to the east.
  • (d) Pune is near 73.9 E, over three degrees to the west.
