Question 27: Geography

Consider the following statements :

  1. 1.In India, State Governments do not have the power to auction non-coal mines.
  2. 2.Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand do not have gold mines.
  3. 3.Rajasthan has iron ore mines.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

a1 and 2
b2 only
c1 and 3
d3 only

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Rajasthan has iron ore deposits, for example around Jaipur, so statement 3 is correct. Statement 1 is wrong because, after the 2015 amendment of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, State governments conduct the auction of mineral concessions, including for non-coal minerals. Statement 2 is wrong because both Andhra Pradesh (for example Ramagiri) and Jharkhand have gold deposits that are worked as mines.

  • 1. States auction mineral concessions under the 2015 MMDR amendment.
  • 2. Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand both have gold deposits and mines.
  • 3. Rajasthan has iron ore, for example near Jaipur.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: States auction mineral concessions under the 2015 MMDR amendment.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b) goes: it includes 2.

What you needed to know: Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand both have gold deposits and mines.

Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: statements 1 and 2 are false.
  • (b) Wrong: both States have gold mines.
  • (c) Wrong: statement 1 is false.
  • (d) Right: only Rajasthan's iron ore is correct.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
