AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
India enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 to meet its obligations under the TRIPS Agreement of the World Trade Organization, which requires members to protect geographical indications. The Act came into force in 2003, and Darjeeling Tea was the first Indian product to be registered. The ILO, IMF and UNCTAD do not impose a GI obligation.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The ILO deals with labour standards.
- (b) The IMF deals with monetary and balance-of-payments matters.
- (c) UNCTAD deals with trade and development policy, not intellectual property obligations.
- (d) Right: the WTO's TRIPS Agreement requires protection of GIs.
