UPSC Prelims 2017 · GS Paper I
Question 9: International Relations and Current Affairs
Which of the following gives ‘Global Gender Gap Index’ ranking to the countries of the world ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).
The Global Gender Gap Index is published every year by the World Economic Forum, which has ranked countries on it since 2006. It measures the gap between women and men in economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment. The UN Human Rights Council, UN Women and the WHO do not publish this ranking; the UNDP has its own, separate Gender Inequality Index. Remember: the Gender Gap Index is the WEF's.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: the World Economic Forum publishes the Global Gender Gap Index.
- (b) Wrong: the UN Human Rights Council does not rank countries on a gender gap index.
- (c) Wrong: UN Women does not publish this index.
- (d) Wrong: the WHO publishes health data, not this ranking.
