UPSC Prelims 2017 · GS Paper I
Question 10: Polity and Governance
Which of the following statements is/are correct regarding Smart India Hackathon 2017 ?
- 1.It is a centrally sponsored scheme for developing every city of our country into Smart Cities in a decade.
- 2.It is an initiative to identify new digital technology innovations for solving the many problems faced by our country.
- 3.It is a programme aimed at making all the financial transactions in our country completely digital in a decade.
Select the correct answer using the code given below :
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Smart India Hackathon 2017 was a nationwide initiative of the HRD Ministry (now Education Ministry) that invited students to build digital solutions to real problems faced by government departments and industry. So only Statement 2 is right. Statement 1 describes the Smart Cities Mission and Statement 3 describes the drive for digital payments; both are separate programmes and neither is a hackathon. Remember: a hackathon identifies innovations, it is not a funding scheme.
- 1. That describes the Smart Cities Mission, not a hackathon.
- 2. The hackathon sought digital innovations to solve national problems.
- 3. Fully digital transactions are the aim of the digital payments drive, not this event.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.
What you needed to know: Fully digital transactions are the aim of the digital payments drive, not this event.
The red flag in statement 3 is “all”. In UPSC’s papers, statements with “all” were true 41% of the time (76 statements). A hint, not a rule.
Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: statements 1 and 3 describe other programmes (Smart Cities Mission, digital payments).
- (b) Right: only the innovation-for-problem-solving statement is correct.
- (c) Wrong: a hackathon is not a plan for fully digital transactions.
- (d) Wrong: statement 3 is false, so this pair is incorrect.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
