Question 89: Economy and Social Development

What is the aim of the programme ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyan’ ?

aAchieving 100% literacy by promoting collaboration between voluntary organizations and government’s education system and local communities.
bConnecting institutions of higher education with local communities to address development challenges through appropriate technologies.
cStrengthening India’s scientific research institutions in order to make India a scientific and technological power.
dDeveloping human capital by allocating special funds for health care and education of rural and urban poor, and organizing skill development programmes and vocational training for them.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, launched in 2014 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Education), links institutions of higher education with local communities. Each participating institution adopts villages and helps them address development challenges through appropriate technologies and know-how. It is not a literacy drive, a scheme to strengthen research institutions, or a human capital fund for the poor. Remember: UBA = institutions adopt villages to solve local problems.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: 100 per cent literacy is not its aim.
  • (b) Right: it connects higher education institutions with local communities for appropriate technology.
  • (c) Wrong: strengthening research institutions is not its aim.
  • (d) Wrong: special funds for health and education of the poor are not its aim.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
