Question 75: History and Culture

Which of the following is/are famous for Sun temples ?

  1. 1.Arasavalli
  2. 2.Amarakantak
  3. 3.Omkareshwar

Select the correct answer using the code given below :

a1 only
b2 and 3 only
c1 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Arasavalli, near Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh, is famous for its ancient Sun temple dedicated to Suryanarayana, one of the few Sun temples in India. Amarakantak in Madhya Pradesh is known as the source of the Narmada and for its group of temples, not for a Sun temple, and Omkareshwar on the Narmada is famed as a Shiva jyotirlinga. Remember: Arasavalli, Konark and Modhera are the Sun temples to know.

  • 1. Arasavalli has the Suryanarayana Sun temple.
  • 2. Amarakantak is the source of the Narmada, with temples of other deities.
  • 3. Omkareshwar is a Shiva jyotirlinga on the Narmada.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (b), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.

What you needed to know: Omkareshwar is a Shiva jyotirlinga on the Narmada.

Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: only Arasavalli is famous for a Sun temple.
  • (b) Wrong: Amarakantak and Omkareshwar are known for other deities.
  • (c) Wrong: Omkareshwar is a Shiva jyotirlinga site, not a Sun temple.
  • (d) Wrong: Amarakantak and Omkareshwar are not Sun temple sites.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
