Question 74: Science and Technology

Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) are used to create digital display in many devices. What are the advantages of OLED displays over Liquid Crystal displays ?

  1. 1.OLED displays can be fabricated on flexible plastic substrates.
  2. 2.Roll-up displays embedded in clothing can be made using OLEDs.
  3. 3.Transparent displays are possible using OLEDs.

Select the correct answer using the code given below :

a1 and 3 only
b2 only
c1, 2 and 3
dNone of the above statements is correct

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

OLED displays use organic compounds that emit light when a current passes, so unlike LCDs they need no backlight and no rigid glass layers. They can be built on flexible plastic substrates (Statement 1). That makes roll-up displays, even ones embedded in clothing, possible (Statement 2), and transparent displays are possible as well (Statement 3). All three are advantages of OLED over LCD.

  • 1. OLEDs can be made on flexible plastic.
  • 2. Flexibility allows roll-up displays, even in clothing.
  • 3. Transparent OLED displays are possible.
Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Incomplete: roll-up displays (2) are also possible.
  • (b) Incomplete: flexible substrates and transparency are also advantages.
  • (c) Right: all three are advantages of OLEDs.
  • (d) Wrong: all three statements are correct.
