Question 7: Polity and Governance

Which principle among the following was added to the Directive Principles of State Policy by the 42nd Amendment to the Constitution ?

aEqual pay for equal work for both men and women
bParticipation of workers in the management of industries
cRight to work, education and public assistance
dSecuring living wage and human conditions of work to workers

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

The 42nd Amendment (1976) added three Directive Principles: Article 39A (equal justice and free legal aid), Article 43A (participation of workers in the management of industries) and Article 48A (protection of the environment, forests and wildlife). The other options were in the Constitution from the start: equal pay for equal work in Article 39(d), right to work, education and public assistance in Article 41, and a living wage and decent conditions of work in Article 43. Remember: 39A, 43A, 48A.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: equal pay for equal work is in Article 39(d) from the original Constitution.
  • (b) Right: workers' participation in management was added as Article 43A in 1976.
  • (c) Wrong: the right to work, education and public assistance is in Article 41 originally.
  • (d) Wrong: a living wage and human conditions of work are in Article 43, originally.
