UPSC Prelims 2017 · GS Paper I
Question 6: Environment and Ecology
Consider the following statements in respect of Trade Related Analysis of Fauna and Flora in Commerce (TRAFFIC) :
- 1.TRAFFIC is a bureau under United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
- 2.The mission of TRAFFIC is to ensure that trade in wild plants and animals is not a threat to the conservation of nature.
Which of the above statements is/are correct ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, is a joint programme of WWF and IUCN. It is not a bureau of UNEP, so Statement 1 is wrong. Its stated mission is to ensure that trade in wild plants and animals is not a threat to the conservation of nature, which makes Statement 2 right. It works closely with the CITES secretariat to track illegal wildlife trade. Remember: TRAFFIC is an NGO network of WWF and IUCN, not a UN body.
- 1. TRAFFIC is a joint WWF-IUCN programme, not a UNEP bureau.
- 2. Its mission is to see that wildlife trade does not threaten conservation.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: TRAFFIC is a joint WWF-IUCN programme, not a UNEP bureau.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (d) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Its mission is to see that wildlife trade does not threaten conservation.
Only (b) is left. This one needs every statement.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: TRAFFIC is not a UNEP bureau.
- (b) Right: only Statement 2, the conservation-of-trade mission, is correct.
- (c) Wrong: Statement 1 is false because TRAFFIC belongs to WWF and IUCN.
- (d) Wrong: Statement 2 is correct.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
