UPSC Prelims 2017 · GS Paper I
Question 55: Economy and Social Development
With reference to ‘National Investment and Infrastructure Fund’, which of the following statements is/are correct ?
- 1.It is an organ of NITI Aayog.
- 2.It has a corpus of ₹ 4,00,000 crore at present.
Select the correct answer using the code given below :
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund was set up by the Government of India in 2015 to attract investment, including foreign money, into infrastructure. It is a fund registered as an alternative investment fund, not an organ of NITI Aayog, so Statement 1 is wrong. Its authorised corpus is ₹40,000 crore, not ₹4,00,000 crore, so Statement 2 is wrong as well. Remember: NIIF = ₹40,000 crore, a quasi-sovereign wealth fund.
- 1. NIIF is a Government-backed investment fund, not an organ of NITI Aayog.
- 2. Its corpus is ₹40,000 crore.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: NIIF is a Government-backed investment fund, not an organ of NITI Aayog.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b) goes: it includes 2.
What you needed to know: Its corpus is ₹40,000 crore.
Only (d) is left. This one needs every statement.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: NIIF is not an organ of NITI Aayog.
- (b) Wrong: the corpus is ₹40,000 crore, not ₹4,00,000 crore.
- (c) Wrong: both statements are false.
- (d) Right: neither statement is correct.
