UPSC Prelims 2017 · GS Paper I
Question 33: Economy and Social Development
What is/are the advantage/advantages of implementing the ‘National Agriculture Market’ scheme ?
- 1.It is a pan-India electronic trading portal for agricultural commodities.
- 2.It provides the farmers access to nationwide market, with prices commensurate with the quality of their produce.
Select the correct answer using the code given below :
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
The National Agriculture Market (e-NAM), launched in April 2016, is a pan-India electronic trading portal that links existing wholesale produce markets (APMC mandis), so Statement 1 is right. Because buyers anywhere can bid online and prices reflect quality assessment, farmers gain access to a nationwide market with prices matching the quality of their produce, so Statement 2 is right. Remember: e-NAM networks the mandis for transparent, online price discovery.
- 1. e-NAM is a pan-India electronic trading portal for farm commodities.
- 2. Farmers get a national market and quality-linked prices.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: e-NAM is a pan-India electronic trading portal for farm commodities.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Farmers get a national market and quality-linked prices.
Only (c) is left. This one needs every statement.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Incomplete: the nationwide market access with quality-based prices (2) is also an advantage.
- (b) Incomplete: the pan-India portal (1) is also correct.
- (c) Right: both statements are correct.
- (d) Wrong: both statements describe e-NAM correctly.
