UPSC Prelims 2016 · GS Paper I
Question 28: Geography
Which of the following is/are tributary/tributaries of Brahmaputra?
- 1.Dibang
- 2.Kameng
- 3.Lohit
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
Dibang, Lohit and Kameng (called Jia Bhareli in Assam) all rise in Arunachal Pradesh and flow into the Brahmaputra, so all three listed rivers are its tributaries. The Subansiri is another Arunachal river that joins it. Remember the Arunachal-origin rivers of the Brahmaputra system.
- 1. Dibang joins the Brahmaputra in Assam.
- 2. Kameng joins the Brahmaputra in Assam as the Jia Bhareli.
- 3. Lohit joins the Brahmaputra in Assam.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Dibang joins the Brahmaputra in Assam.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Kameng joins the Brahmaputra in Assam as the Jia Bhareli.
Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Dibang is a tributary, but so are Kameng and Lohit.
- (b) Kameng and Lohit are tributaries, but so is Dibang.
- (c) Dibang and Lohit are tributaries, but so is Kameng.
- (d) Right: Dibang, Kameng and Lohit are all Brahmaputra tributaries.
