UPSC Prelims 2016 · GS Paper I
Question 2: Economy and Social Development
Which of the following is/are the indicator/indicators used by IFPRI to compute the Global Hunger Index Report?
- 1.Undernourishment
- 2.Child stunting
- 3.Child mortality
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
The Global Hunger Index, which in 2016 was prepared by IFPRI with partner organisations, combines undernourishment, child stunting, child mortality and child wasting. The question lists three of these four and every one of them is used, so the code covering all three is right. Remember that it is a four-indicator index built from nutrition and child-health data, not income or poverty figures.
- 1. Share of the population that is undernourished is a GHI indicator.
- 2. Stunting (low height for age) among children under five is an indicator.
- 3. Mortality of children under five is an indicator.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Share of the population that is undernourished is a GHI indicator.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) and (d) go: each of them leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Stunting (low height for age) among children under five is an indicator.
Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Undernourishment is used, but it is not the only indicator.
- (b) Child stunting and child mortality are used, but undernourishment is also used.
- (c) Right: undernourishment, child stunting and child mortality are all GHI indicators.
- (d) Child stunting is also an indicator, so this leaves one out.
Worth knowing: IFPRI has since stopped co-publishing the Global Hunger Index; Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide now publish it, though the indicators are the same.
