Passage beginning “Historically, the biggest challenge to world…”

According to the above passage, the biggest challenge to world agriculture is :

ato find sufficient land for agriculture and to expand food processing industries
bto eradicate hunger in underdeveloped countries
cto achieve a balance between the production of food and non-food items
dto achieve a balance between demand for and supply of food

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

The passage names the historic main challenge for world agriculture as balancing the demand for food with its supply, and later calls this balance an essential condition for avoiding hunger. Land availability, food processing, hunger in poor countries and the balance between food and non-food output are either not named as the challenge or not discussed at all.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Land and processing are not named as the challenge.
  • (b) Hunger is a result of the imbalance and weak purchasing power, not the stated challenge.
  • (c) The balance between food and non-food output is not discussed.
  • (d) Right: balancing demand and supply of food.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
