Question 36: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Direction for the following 3 (three) items · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “Six boxes A, B, C and…”

The football is in the box of which colour ?

aYellow
bIndigo
cCannot be determined as data are inadequate
dBlue

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

The balls for A, B, C, E and F are tennis, volleyball, cricket, golf and hockey, so the football is in D. Colours: A orange, C green, E violet, F indigo, which leaves blue and yellow for B and D. Nothing in the clues says which of the two is blue, so D's colour could be either. The football box's colour cannot be fixed: the data are inadequate.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) D could be yellow but could equally be blue.
  • (b) Indigo is F's colour, and F holds the hockey ball.
  • (c) Right: D is blue or yellow and the clues do not choose.
  • (d) D could be blue but is not forced to be.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
