Question 35: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Direction for the following 3 (three) items · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “Six boxes A, B, C and…”

Which of the following statements is/are correct ?

aD is painted yellow
bF is painted indigo
cB is painted blue
dAll of the above

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Colours are fixed for A (orange), C (green) and E (violet, the golf box). The hockey box is F; it is not blue or yellow, and violet, orange and green are taken, so F is indigo. B and D take blue and yellow in an order the clues do not settle. So only F being indigo must be true.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) D is blue or yellow; the clues do not settle which.
  • (b) Right: F is indigo, the only colour left for the hockey box.
  • (c) B is blue or yellow; the clues do not settle which.
  • (d) Only (b) must be true.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
