Question 17: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability
There are five persons in a group — P, Q, R, S and T. The group has one doctor, one lawyer and one artist. P and S are unmarried students. T is a man married to one of the group members. Q is the brother of P and is neither doctor nor artist. R is not doctor. Who is the spouse of R ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
T is a man married to a group member. P and S are unmarried, Q is P's brother and therefore a man, and T cannot marry himself, so T's spouse is R. Hence R's spouse is T. The jobs agree: Q lawyer, R artist, T doctor. Remember: strike out everyone who cannot be the spouse and see who is left.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) P is an unmarried student.
- (b) Right: T is the married man and his spouse can only be R.
- (c) Nothing marries Q to R; T is the married man and his spouse is R.
- (d) S is an unmarried student.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
