Question 77: Geography
Which one of the following countries of South-West Asia does not open out to the Mediterranean Sea?
aSyria
bJordan
cLebanon
dIsrael
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Jordan has only a short coastline on the Gulf of Aqaba, which belongs to the Red Sea, so it does not open out to the Mediterranean. Syria, Lebanon and Israel all have Mediterranean coasts. Jordan reaches the Mediterranean only through other countries. Remember: Jordan is the odd one out, with Aqaba on the Red Sea.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Syria has a Mediterranean coast with ports such as Latakia.
- (b) Correct: Jordan has no Mediterranean coast; it opens to the Red Sea at Aqaba.
- (c) Lebanon lies along the eastern Mediterranean.
- (d) Israel has a Mediterranean coastline, including Haifa and Tel Aviv.
