Question 6: Geography

Which one of the following pairs of States of India indicates the easternmost and westernmost State?

aAssam and Rajasthan
bArunachal Pradesh and Rajasthan
cAssam and Gujarat
dArunachal Pradesh and Gujarat

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Arunachal Pradesh, at about 97 degrees E, is India's easternmost State, and Gujarat, with Kutch at about 68 degrees E, is the westernmost. Assam lies west of Arunachal, and Rajasthan's western edge lies east of Kutch, so any pair containing Assam or Rajasthan is wrong. Remember: easternmost Arunachal Pradesh, westernmost Gujarat.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Assam is not the easternmost State; Arunachal Pradesh lies further east. Rajasthan is not the westernmost either.
  • (b) Arunachal is right, but Rajasthan lies east of Gujarat's Kutch, so it is not the westernmost.
  • (c) Gujarat is right, but Assam lies west of Arunachal Pradesh, so it is not the easternmost.
  • (d) Correct: Arunachal Pradesh is easternmost and Gujarat is westernmost.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
