Question 33: Geography
The area known as 'Golan Heights' sometimes appears in the news in the context of the events related to
aCentral Asia
bMiddle East
cSouth-East Asia
dCentral Africa
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
The Golan Heights is a rocky plateau on the Israel-Syria border in the Middle East. Israel captured it from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and later extended its law over it. The status of the area remains a source of tension between the two countries. Remember it as a West Asian (Middle East) flashpoint.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Central Asia is the region of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and neighbours, not the Golan.
- (b) Correct: the Golan Heights lies on the Israel-Syria border in the Middle East.
- (c) South-East Asia does not contain the Golan Heights.
- (d) Central Africa has no connection with the Golan Heights.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
