Question 32: Science and Technology
With reference to 'Near Field Communication (NFC) Technology', which of the following statements is/are correct?
- 1.It is a contactless communication technology that uses electromagnetic radio fields.
- 2.NFC is designed for use by devices which can be at a distance of even a metre from each other.
- 3.NFC can use encryption when sending sensitive information.
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Near Field Communication is a short-range, contactless technology that uses electromagnetic radio fields to let two devices exchange data when they are almost touching, so statement 1 is correct. Its range is only a few centimetres, not a metre, so statement 2 is wrong. NFC can use encryption to protect sensitive data, as in contactless payments, so statement 3 is correct.
- 1. NFC is contactless and uses electromagnetic radio fields.
- 2. Its range is only a few centimetres, not a metre.
- 3. NFC can use encryption to secure sensitive information.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: NFC is contactless and uses electromagnetic radio fields.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (a) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.
What you needed to know: Its range is only a few centimetres, not a metre.
Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: statement 2 is false, since NFC works over a few centimetres.
- (b) Incomplete: statement 1 is also correct.
- (c) Correct: NFC is contactless radio-based and can use encryption; its range is very short.
- (d) Wrong: statement 2 is false.
