Select the correct answer using the code given below.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
The Rowlatt Act (1919) followed the recommendations of the Sedition Committee headed by Justice Rowlatt, so statement 1 is correct. Gandhi used the organisation and volunteers of the Home Rule League to spread the satyagraha, so statement 2 is correct. The Simon Commission arrived in 1928, nine years after the Rowlatt Satyagraha, so statement 3 is wrong.
- 1. The Rowlatt Act followed the Sedition Committee's recommendations.
- 2. Gandhi used the Home Rule League's network for the satyagraha.
- 3. The Simon Commission came in 1928, long after the 1919 Rowlatt Satyagraha.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Gandhi used the Home Rule League's network for the satyagraha.
- Then, if you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.
What you needed to know: The Simon Commission came in 1928, long after the 1919 Rowlatt Satyagraha.
Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statement 1.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Incomplete: statement 2 is also correct.
- (b) Correct: statements 1 and 2 hold; the Simon Commission came in 1928.
- (c) Wrong: statement 1 is also correct, and statement 3 is false.
- (d) Wrong: statement 3 is false as the Simon Commission came in 1928.
