Question 65: Reading Comprehension

In this passage, the Convention puts the responsibility for the provision of financial support on the developed countries because of
- 1.their higher level of per capita incomes.
- 2.their large quantum of GDP.
- 3.their large contribution to the stock of GHGs in the atmosphere.
Select the correct answer using the code given below :
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
The passage says the Convention puts the responsibility for financial support on developed countries by taking into account their contribution to the stock of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. So only statement 3 is the stated basis. Higher per capita income and a large GDP are never given as reasons; they may be true of developed countries, but the question asks what the passage states.
- 1. Per capita income is not given as the basis.
- 2. The size of GDP is not given as the basis.
- 3. Their contribution to the stock of greenhouse gases is the stated basis.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a), (b) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: Per capita income is not given as the basis.
Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 2 or 3.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: per capita income is not stated as a reason.
- (b) Wrong: neither income nor GDP is stated as a reason.
- (c) Right: the Convention bases responsibility on contribution to the greenhouse gas stock.
- (d) Wrong: statements 1 and 2 are not stated reasons.
Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
