Question 77: Geography

Consider the following pairs :

National HighwayCities connected
1.NH 4Chennai and Hyderabad
2.NH 6Mumbai and Kolkata
3.NH 15Ahmedabad and Jodhpur

Which of the above pairs is/are correctly matched?

a1 and 2 only
b3 only
c1, 2 and 3
dNone

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

None of the three pairs is correct under the highway numbering of the time. NH 4 ran from Thane near Mumbai through Pune and Bengaluru to Chennai, not between Chennai and Hyderabad. NH 6 ran from Hazira near Surat through Nagpur and Raipur to Kolkata, not from Mumbai. NH 15 ran from Pathankot through Rajasthan to Samakhiali in Gujarat, not simply between Ahmedabad and Jodhpur.

  • 1. NH 4 linked Thane, Pune, Bengaluru and Chennai, not Chennai and Hyderabad.
  • 2. NH 6 ran from Surat region to Kolkata, not from Mumbai.
  • 3. NH 15 ran from Pathankot to Samakhiali.
Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. NH 4 and NH 6 were not mapped to those city pairs.
  • (b) Wrong. NH 15 ran from Pathankot to Samakhiali.
  • (c) Wrong. None of the pairs matches.
  • (d) Right. All three pairs are mismatched.

Worth knowing: National Highways were renumbered later, so these numbers belong to the old system and the question no longer matches the present map.
