UPSC Prelims 2014 · GS Paper I
Question 76: History and Culture
Consider the following towns of India :
- 1.Bhadrachalam
- 2.Chanderi
- 3.Kancheepuram
- 4.Karnal
Which of the above are famous for the production of traditional sarees/fabric?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh is famous for Chanderi sarees and fabric, and Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu for its Kanjeevaram silk sarees. Bhadrachalam, a town on the Godavari, is known for its temple of Lord Rama, and Karnal in Haryana is known for its agricultural research institutes, not for sarees. So the answer is 2 and 3.
- 1. Bhadrachalam is known for its Rama temple, not sarees.
- 2. Chanderi is famous for Chanderi sarees.
- 3. Kancheepuram is famous for Kanjeevaram silk sarees.
- 4. Karnal is known for agriculture and research.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: Bhadrachalam is known for its Rama temple, not sarees.
Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 2, 3 or 4.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Bhadrachalam is a temple town, not known for sarees.
- (b) Right. Chanderi and Kancheepuram are famous for sarees.
- (c) Wrong. Bhadrachalam is not known for traditional sarees.
- (d) Wrong. Bhadrachalam and Karnal are not known for sarees, and it leaves out Chanderi.
