Question 51: Geography

Turkey is located between

aBlack Sea and Caspian Sea
bBlack Sea and Mediterranean Sea
cGulf of Suez and Mediterranean Sea
dGulf of Aqaba and Dead Sea

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Turkey is a peninsula-like country in Asia Minor with a small part in Europe. Its northern coast faces the Black Sea and its southern coast faces the Mediterranean Sea; the Aegean Sea lies to its west. The Caspian Sea is far to the east beyond Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the Gulf of Suez, the Gulf of Aqaba and the Dead Sea lie in the Sinai and Levant region, not in Turkey.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. The Caspian Sea does not touch Turkey and lies far to the east.
  • (b) Right. The Black Sea is to Turkey's north and the Mediterranean to its south.
  • (c) Wrong. The Gulf of Suez is in Egypt.
  • (d) Wrong. The Gulf of Aqaba and the Dead Sea are around Jordan, Israel and Egypt.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
