Question 47: History and Culture
Which one of the following pairs does not form part of the six systems of Indian Philosophy?
aMimamsa and Vedanta
bNyaya and Vaisheshika
cLokayata and Kapalika
dSankhya and Yoga
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
The six orthodox systems of Indian philosophy are Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Sankhya, Yoga, Mimamsa and Vedanta, and they are accepted as astika schools since they respect Vedic authority. Lokayata, the materialist school also called Charvaka, rejects the Vedas, and the Kapalika is a Shaiva ascetic sect, not a philosophical system. So the pair of Lokayata and Kapalika is the one that does not belong.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Mimamsa and Vedanta are both among the six systems.
- (b) Wrong. Nyaya and Vaisheshika are both among the six systems.
- (c) Right. Neither Lokayata nor Kapalika is one of the six.
- (d) Wrong. Sankhya and Yoga are both among the six systems.
