UPSC Prelims 2014 · GS Paper I
Question 10: Environment and Ecology
With reference to a conservation organization called 'Wetlands International', which of the following statements is/are correct?
- 1.It is an intergovernmental organization formed by the countries which are signatories to Ramsar Convention.
- 2.It works at the field level to develop and mobilize knowledge, and use the practical experience to advocate for better policies.
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
Wetlands International is an independent, non-profit, global non-governmental organization working for the conservation and restoration of wetlands. It is not an intergovernmental body formed by Ramsar signatories; the Ramsar Convention is the intergovernmental treaty, and Wetlands International is a separate NGO that works with it. It works at field level to build and share knowledge and uses practical experience to advocate for better policies. So only statement 2 is correct.
- 1. It is an NGO, not an intergovernmental body of Ramsar signatories.
- 2. It does field work and uses that experience to advocate for policy.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: It is an NGO, not an intergovernmental body of Ramsar signatories.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (d) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: It does field work and uses that experience to advocate for policy.
Only (b) is left. This one needs every statement.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Statement 1 is false because it is an NGO, not an intergovernmental organization.
- (b) Right. Only statement 2 is correct.
- (c) Wrong. Statement 1 is false, so both cannot be correct.
- (d) Wrong. Statement 2 correctly describes its work.
