Question 52: History and Culture
Consider the following Bhakti Saints :
- 1.Dadu Dayal
- 2.Guru Nanak
- 3.Tyagaraja
Who among the above was/were preaching when the Lodi dynasty fell and Babur took over?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).
The Lodi dynasty fell at the First Battle of Panipat in 1526, when Babur took over. Guru Nanak (1469-1539) was preaching at that time. Dadu Dayal (1544-1603) came later, in Akbar's period, and Tyagaraja (1767-1847) was a Carnatic composer-saint of the 18th and 19th centuries. So only Guru Nanak was alive and preaching in 1526.
- 1. Dadu Dayal lived 1544-1603, after Babur's takeover.
- 2. Guru Nanak lived 1469-1539 and was preaching in 1526.
- 3. Tyagaraja lived 1767-1847.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: Dadu Dayal lived 1544-1603, after Babur's takeover.
- Then, if you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (c) goes: it includes 3.
What you needed to know: Tyagaraja lived 1767-1847.
Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statement 2.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Dadu Dayal and Tyagaraja both lived later.
- (b) Correct. Only Guru Nanak was preaching in 1526.
- (c) Wrong. Tyagaraja lived in the 18th and 19th centuries.
- (d) Wrong. Dadu Dayal was born in 1544, after 1526.
