Question 69: Reading Comprehension

English Passage – 2 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “It was already late when we set…”

The author asked John to drive more slowly because

athe road led to the hills.
bJohn was an inexperienced driver.
cthe road was not clearly visible.
dthey were in wilderness.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

Darkness had fallen, and as the travellers climbed into the hills it grew colder and rain began, which made it hard at times to see the road. It was then that the author asked John to slow down. So the reason is that the road was not clearly visible. The hills, John's lack of experience and the wilderness are not given as the reason for the request.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. The road leading to the hills is not the stated reason.
  • (b) Wrong. John's experience is never discussed.
  • (c) Right. Rain and darkness made the road hard to see.
  • (d) Wrong. Being in wilderness is not given as the reason.
