English Passage – 1 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “Seven-year-old Jim came home from the…”

Jim returned the watch to the old man and the little boy because

athey gave him chocolates.
bhis father was proud of him.
che was satisfied with the condition of his bicycle.
dthey were late only by 30 minutes.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

When the old man and the boy came back with the bicycle at half past four, Jim went to his room, then came out and examined the bicycle. Only after checking it did he say they could have their watch back. That order of events shows his reason: he was satisfied with the condition of his bicycle. The chocolates, his father's pride and the half-hour delay are not given as his reason.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. The chocolates were given with the bicycle; they are not why he returned the watch.
  • (b) Wrong. His father's pride is not linked to the watch.
  • (c) Right. He returned the watch after examining the bicycle and finding it fine.
  • (d) Wrong. Being late by half an hour is not given as his reason.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
