Question 57: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Consider the following figures :

Which one of the following figures would logically come in the 7th position indicated above by a question mark ?

six circles numbered (1) to (6), each holding a small circle or square in the centre with curved arrows around it, and a question mark at position (7); below them four option circles (a) to (d) of the same kind

cpicture (c)
dpicture (d)

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Two things change independently. The inner symbol alternates circle, square, circle, square, so position 7 needs a circle, which rules out (c). The arrow arrangement repeats every third figure (figure 4 carries figure 1's arrows), so figure 7 carries the same arrows as figures 1 and 4, here with a circle. Among the circle options, only (d) matches that arrangement.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. It is a circle, but its arrows differ from those of figures 1 and 4.
  • (b) Wrong. It is a circle, but its arrows differ from those of figures 1 and 4.
  • (c) Wrong. It has a square; position 7 needs a circle.
  • (d) Right. A circle with the arrow arrangement that repeats from figures 1 and 4.
