AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Watch where the arrow sits among the bracket pieces. It moves one place left at each stage, cycling through left, middle and right: middle, left, right, middle. So at stage five it is at the left. Whenever it wraps round from the left end to the right end, the whole figure turns upside down, with the arrow reversing and the bracket flipping, and it stays that way until the next wrap. At stage five there is no new wrap, so the arrow at the left still points down: option (b).

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. The arrow points up; stage five needs it pointing down.
  • (b) Right. The arrow is at the left, pointing down, with the bracket on the right.
  • (c) Wrong. The arrow sits between bracket pieces, the layout of stages one and four, not stage five.
  • (d) Wrong. The arrow is right, but the bracket is not drawn as in the flipped layout.
