Question 89: Geography

Which one of the following is the characteristic climate of the Tropical Savannah Region?

aRainfall throughout the year
bRainfall in winter only
cAn extremely short dry season
dA definite dry and wet season

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

The tropical savannah climate has a clearly defined dry season and wet season, with tall grass and scattered trees, as in the African savannas and the Brazilian campos. It does not have rain all year (the equatorial climate), only winter rain (the Mediterranean climate), or an extremely short dry season.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: rainfall throughout the year is the equatorial climate.
  • (b) Wrong: winter-only rain is the Mediterranean climate.
  • (c) Wrong: the savannah has a long, definite dry season.
  • (d) Correct: a definite dry and wet season.
