Question 87: Environment and Ecology

Consider the following protected areas :

  1. 1.Bandipur
  2. 2.Bhitarkanika
  3. 3.Manas
  4. 4.Sunderbans

Which of the above are declared Tiger Reserves?

a1 and 2 only
b1, 3 and 4 only
c2, 3 and 4 only
d1, 2, 3 and 4

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Bandipur (Karnataka), Manas (Assam) and the Sundarbans (West Bengal) are tiger reserves under Project Tiger. Bhitarkanika in Odisha is known for its mangroves and saltwater crocodiles; it is a national park and wildlife sanctuary, not a tiger reserve. Remember it as a crocodile site, not a tiger one.

  • 1. Bandipur is a tiger reserve in Karnataka.
  • 2. Bhitarkanika is a crocodile and mangrove sanctuary and national park, not a tiger reserve.
  • 3. Manas is a tiger reserve in Assam.
  • 4. The Sundarbans is a tiger reserve in West Bengal.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.

What you needed to know: Bhitarkanika is a crocodile and mangrove sanctuary and national park, not a tiger reserve.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 1, 3 or 4.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: Bhitarkanika is not a tiger reserve, and it leaves out Manas and the Sundarbans.
  • (b) Correct: Bandipur, Manas and the Sundarbans are tiger reserves.
  • (c) Wrong: it includes Bhitarkanika and leaves out Bandipur.
  • (d) Wrong: Bhitarkanika is not a tiger reserve.
