Question 44: Geography

  1. 1.Cowpea
  2. 2.Green gram
  3. 3.Pigeon pea

Which of the above is/are used as pulse, fodder and green manure?

a1 and 2 only
b2 only
c1 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Cowpea and green gram (moong) are grown for their pulse grain, their leaves and stems serve as fodder, and both are also ploughed in as green manure crops. Pigeon pea (arhar) is grown mainly for its pulse, with the stalks used as fuel, and it is not used as a green manure crop.

  • 1. Cowpea is a pulse, a fodder and a green manure crop.
  • 2. Green gram is a pulse, a fodder and a green manure crop.
  • 3. Pigeon pea is mainly a pulse and is not used as green manure.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: Cowpea is a pulse, a fodder and a green manure crop.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.

What you needed to know: Pigeon pea is mainly a pulse and is not used as green manure.

Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statement 2.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: cowpea and green gram serve as pulse, fodder and green manure.
  • (b) Incomplete: cowpea is also used as pulse, fodder and green manure.
  • (c) Wrong: pigeon pea is not used as green manure.
  • (d) Wrong: pigeon pea is not used as green manure.
