AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
The Ryotwari Settlement, introduced in Madras and Bombay and associated with Thomas Munro, dealt directly with the cultivator (ryot). Lands were surveyed and assessed, the ryot received a patta recording his holding, and he paid the revenue directly to the government, with no zamindar in between. All three statements describe it correctly.
- 1. The ryot paid revenue directly to the government.
- 2. The government issued pattas to the ryots.
- 3. Lands were surveyed and assessed before being taxed.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Incomplete: pattas and survey and assessment are also features.
- (b) Incomplete: land survey and assessment before taxation is also a feature.
- (c) Correct: direct payment, pattas, and survey and assessment.
- (d) Wrong: all three statements are accurate.
