cthere were widespread communal disturbances in their provinces
dNone of the statements (a), (b) and (c) given above is correct
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
The Congress won the 1937 provincial elections and formed ministries in seven provinces. They resigned in October-November 1939 in protest against the Viceroy Linlithgow's declaration that India was at war with Germany, made without consulting Indian leaders or the elected ministries. None of the three reasons given is correct, so the answer is (d).
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: failure to form ministries elsewhere was not the reason for resigning.
- (b) Wrong: the left wing in the Congress did not make ministries unworkable.
- (c) Wrong: communal disturbances were not why the ministries resigned.
- (d) Correct: they resigned over India being declared a belligerent without consultation.
