Question 49: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Three views of a cube following a particular motion are given below :

What is the letter opposite to A ?

three views of a cube showing letters on its faces: first view A (front), K (top), B (right); second view M (front), H (top), K (right); third view P (front), B (top), H (right)
aH
bP
cB
dM

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Faces seen together on a cube are adjacent. H appears with M and K in the second view, and with B and P in the third, so H is adjacent to four faces: M, K, B and P. A cube has only one face that does not touch a given face, its opposite, and the only face not yet touching H is A. So A is opposite H. The other opposite pairs are B with M and K with P.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right. H touches M, K, B and P, so the only face left to be opposite it is A.
  • (b) Wrong. P is seen next to B and H, and sits opposite K.
  • (c) Wrong. B is seen next to A in the first view, so it is adjacent, not opposite.
  • (d) Wrong. M is seen next to H and K, and sits opposite B.
