Question 39: Geography

Southeast Asia has captivated the attention of global community over space and time as a geostrategically significant region. Which among the following is the most convincing explanation for this global perspective ?

aIt was the hot theatre during the Second World War
bIts location between the Asian powers of China and India
cIt was the arena of superpower confrontation during the Cold War period
dIts location between the Pacific and Indian oceans and its pre-eminent maritime character

AnswerThe answer is (d).

Southeast Asia lies between the Pacific and Indian oceans and straddles sea lanes such as the Strait of Malacca, through which a large part of the world's trade and energy moves. Its position at the meeting point of the two oceans and its strongly maritime character make it geostrategically important in every period, not just during the Second World War or the Cold War. Being between India and China is part of the picture but not the best explanation.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) The Second World War role was temporary; it does not explain lasting importance.
  • (b) Position between China and India matters, but it is narrower than the maritime location.
  • (c) Cold War confrontation was one phase, not the lasting reason.
  • (d) Right: location between the Pacific and Indian oceans and its maritime character.
